Artist's Comments

This took 30+ hours, so I'm really just glad it's over and hope to never look at it again. Ever. But I encourage you to. =P

Being a Gemini, I seem to have two really different personalities. I think it's always been this way and I suspect it has something to do with my up-bringing.

One side of me is shy, quiet, dry and sarcastic. This side usually takes over when I'm around people I don't know/people I don't want to know or when I'm feeling self conscious. I spent most of high school, TAFE & Uni feeling this way, so...my bad. The other side is kind of quirky and flamboyant and it usually takes a while before I feel comfortable enough to act this way around most people. I don't really know why; people keep throwing that 'wall' analogy at me, so it's probably true.

Moving on. This shoot was an exploration of masculinity and femininity. Australian society, in particular, has progressed to a point where it's acceptable for women to be 'masculine' and have 'masculine' interests. They can wear pants, drink beer, enjoy sport, watch action movies and listen to predominantly male musicians - sometimes I think it's even encouraged. Australian culture seems to thrive on masculinity. Just listen to the accents. But it's not really the same for men who are 'feminine'. I'd like to think I possess a certain amount of masculinity, but I'm not going to deny that I love fashion, musicals, female singers and a number of TV shows, targeted at women. (Grey's Anatomy, Gilmore Girls, Sex & The City, etc.) So I don't really have a lot in common with the majority of males I know/meet and most would probably agree that these interests make me less of a man.

I wanted to juxtapose these two aspects of my personality, so that's what I did - through photography.

I long for the day when all men feel comfortable enough with their masculinity and femininity to legitimately draaag.

All work is my own.

I agree. Men should be able to wear dresses without feeling like idiots. Of course, by that I mean it shouldn't matter what you wear, everyone should be able to wear whatever makes them feel comfortable.

However, the desire seems to exist to "cross-dress" mostly in people with gender identity issues, or simply homosexuals, though these two often go hand in hand. I do speak from personal experience. I'm a male who identifies as female and I've been trying to get into dresses, make-up, and heels since I was very young.
